Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?

At any given moment, I barely have any idea what day or time it is.

When we lived in New Jersey, Nathan got out of school at 3:15. Here in California, he gets out at 3, except on Tuesdays when he gets out at 2:15. Two months into the school year and I have been nearly late to pick him up more than half the time. See, on Tuesdays, I stare at the clock all day so that I won’t forget and then become engrossed in work and almost actually do. The rest of the week, I keep thinking he gets out at 3:15, which would mean I don’t have to leave the house until 3, except he gets out at 3 so I have to leave at 2:45, but I don’t realize that until 2:44.

The :15 part of the time is supposed to go with the 3pm days, not with the 2pm days. It’s mixing me all up. Hopefully, I’ll figure it out before June. (Note: School gets out in May in CA, not June like in NJ.)

When we lived in New Jersey, Nathan had karate on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Here in California, he takes martial arts (we don’t call it karate anymore, except when I forget, which is nearly every day) on Mondays and Wednesdays. That means that if we went to karate, ahem MARTIAL ARTS, last night, today must be either Tuesday or Thursday, except I still feel like it’s Wednesday or Friday. Also, class is at 6:30, not 6:15 like it used to be, so when I’m ready to leave at 6, that’s just way too early.

In New Jersey, I worked in an office Monday through Wednesday, then worked from home on Thursdays and Fridays. Here in California, I work from home every day. I can no longer figure out what day it is based on when I last showered, what kind of pants I have on, or if I’m wearing a bra. (The upside is that I’m rarely wearing appropriate pants or a bra, so this isn’t all bad.)

When I had that job in NJ, I got paid twice per month. Now, as a freelancer, I get paid whenever the money shows up. It could be the 3rd or it could be the 25th. I have no idea.

When I go out in the middle of the day, it’s hot outside (not complaining). But it’s October (I think?) and it’s supposed to be cold now. But it will be chilly in the evening and morning, so maybe it really is fall. I DON’T KNOW ANYMORE.

Everything at YeahWrite operates on East Coast time which was perfect when I lived on the East Coast. My West Coast editors were always 3 hours behind me and I was still capable of basic math back then so I always knew what time it was in NJ and out west. But now, I’m out west and the people who were in same time zone as me are now 3 hours ahead and the people who were behind are now on the same schedule as me. And the one in Chicago was one hour behind and now he’s two hours ahead, and don’t even ask me what day or time it is in Austrailia where there’s yet another editor because I can’t figure out where I even am anymore.

All of this to say I probably should be doing something right now that I’m not doing and I probably forgot to do something earlier that I was supposed to do. Or maybe not. Who knows?

The California seasons really fuck with your circadian rhythms. Fall is when the light changes, but not necessarily the temperature. It used to be cooler, but you know, climate change.
Hang in there. This must be so weird.

It’s way better than the alternative (It’s already really cold in NJ) so I’m not complaining at all. It’s just, when you know what to expect for over 40 years, not having it just feels off. I’m just so happy to know there will still be sun here all winter and I won’t fall into as deep a depression.

See, I haven’t moved anywhere and I’m still kinda confused. 🙂 Seriously, though, those small 15 minute changes are way worse than the larger time zone issues. It’s really hard to learn new habits.

Ha! Yeah I didn’t mean to imply I’m not regularly confused anyway. This is just making it worse 🙂

I work from home also, and I realized recently that I wear jeans pretty much 365 days a year now. LOL. So much for all those nice pants in my closet.

I haven’t worked in an office that required nice clothes on a full time basis since 2007, so I only have one or two nice outfits anyway. It’s fine though – I hated leaving the house for work. If I ever have to go back, I’ll need to buy a whole new wardrobe though!
